Pressure Treated Decking

Pressure treated lumber is the most economical and popular choice as a decking material. The source wood is usually spruce, pine or fir lumber. The treatment applied to the lumber helps protect against moisture and insect damage, yet is safe for people and pets. Most pressure treatments include a brown pigment that will fade in the first year or two; the wood itself will grey naturally, due to exposure to the UV light from the sun.

While economical and natural-looking, wood decking can crack, splinter, or warp over time. It may be susceptible to discolouration and deterioration due to mould/mildew, especially if shaded by buildings or trees. It will require regular maintenance to maintain its appearance and to prolong its life.

Composite Decking

Modern, composite decking is the material of choice for customers who are looking for a decking product that will maintain its appearance and durability for many years, with virtually no maintenance. Most products have a composite core made of wood dust and recycled plastic, with a wrap of PVC. This PVC cover is embossed with a wood-like grain and is pigmented to resemble real wood. A wide range of colours and textures are available, allowing the customer to pick a product that complements their home’s exterior perfectly.

Composite decking products will not split, crack or warp and they are highly scratch, fade and stain resistant, requiring nothing more than an occasional washing with a mild detergent to maintain their “as new” appearance. Most composite decking products have comprehensive warranties that last twenty years or more…essentially the entire lifetime of a deck. For extreme applications such as docks, pool decks and the like, 100% PVC decking is completely impervious to moisture…the ultimate in waterproof decking material.

Cedar Decking

Cedar decking has several advantages over pressure-treated lumber as a decking option, both in terms of appearance and of durability. Cedar decking has fewer and smaller knots and is more dimensionally-stable: less prone to warping or splitting. It is also naturally resistant to moisture and insects, without the need for an additional, chemical preservative.

In the absence of being stained or finished, cedar will weather to a natural and attractive silver-grey colour that will enhance the look or any home or cottage. It is pleasant to walk on, cooler on bare feet than other decking options. Cedar is also the “greenest” decking selection, producing the least environmental impact in harvesting/producing and eventual disposal.

Railing

Besides being a contributor to the esthetics of your outdoor space, the choice of railing is essential in providing safety for most deck projects. Whatever style of railing style you choose, ensure that it meets the requirements of building codes in your area.

Wooden railings in the wood species that matches your deck are only the starting point for the many options that are available.

Metal railing products, usually powder-coated steel or aluminum, are available in several colours to complement your space. Glass panels, used in combination with metal posts and railings, will give a sense of openness and preserve the view of other outdoor spaces. All of these options require little or no maintenance and will remain attractive and secure for the lifetime of your deck. Modular components, common to many brands, make these products customizable and easy to install.

Many brands of composite decking materials have complementary railing product lines that ensure that everything matches perfectly…or you can mix and match your decking and railing for a look that is uniquely your own.

Many railing products include an option to add lighting features, enhancing safety and giving “warmth” to these spaces after dark. Most use low-voltage LEDs that are long-lived and use little electricity, as well as being safe and easy to install.
